Black Theatre Workshop (BTW) is currently seeking a Producer to build on its 50-year history of artistic growth and success. In partnership with Senior Staff, the Producer is responsibility for the organizing of the theatre’s productions, both in Montreal and on tour, from conception to completion.

Organizational Overview

BTW is a ground-breaking theatre company committed to showcasing and fostering Black Canadian artists, inspiring dialogue and broadening understanding across the country. BTW is Canada’s longest running theatre company dedicated to the works of Black and diasporic communities. Its mission is to promote and produce outstanding theatre that educates, entertains and inspires. The company strives to create greater cross-cultural understanding by expanding the representation of Black Canadian artists.

Currently BTW produces one to two mainstage productions per year, as well as a touring production in the schools. Other related activities include a theatre training program, a play reading series, various smaller events and fundraisers.

Responsibilities of the Producer

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Producer is responsible for all aspects of the company’s productions including the management of calendars, budgets and contracting. The Producer ensures the smooth and efficient operation of productions and provides support as needed to the creative teams.

The Producer is responsible for the execution of activities in the following areas:

  • Create and organize production calendars, incorporating deadlines for production elements.
  • Develop and manage production budgets.
  • Create and manage contracts with production specific staff.
  • Management of production meetings and supervision of production specific support staff.
  • Ensure adherence to the Canadian Theatre Agreement, acts as principal contact with the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association (CAEA), APASQ, UDA, and any artist union as needed.
  • Coordinate any space requirements including rehearsal space rentals, theatre or venue rentals as needed. Including production liaison for any collaborations, co-productions or presentations of productions with other theatres.
  • Schedule all production meetings and distribute notes as needed.
  • Liaise with the Technical Directors of venues or productions ensuring that the design conception and build is in keeping with the technical specs of the venue.
  • Leader for any occupational health and safety protocols.
  • Develop and/or maintain records of available technical staff including technical directors, stage managers, apprentice managers etc., and maintain strong relationships with the artistic community.
  • Act as a lead and point of contact for rehearsal hall rentals and relations related to rentals of other items.
  • Manage the rehearsal hall calendar including reserving space for internal activities and scheduling external rentals.

Qualifications and key competencies

  • 2+ years of related theatre work
  • Proven aptitude for planning and budgeting
  • Experience leading, empowering and/or mentoring creative teams
  • Strong collaborative decision-making abilities
  • Knowledge of the local and national theatre landscape would be a plus
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; professional fluency in French required

Salary range

  • $40 – 45k/year (based on experience).
  • 30-40 hours a week (average of 35h/week)
  • 2 weeks paid Winter Holiday break
  • 2 weeks summer vacation (additional summertime off can be arranged)
