Description
The Gleaner is looking for an energetic, creative person to help bring our local newspaper to life — online and in person.
We're a printed and digital community newspaper serving the Chateauguay Valley, and we're growing our presence in ways that go beyond the page. This summer internship puts you at the centre of that effort: making content people actually want to share, and showing up where the community gathers.
What you'll be doing
You'll create social media content — posts, short videos, photos, and brief write-ups — drawn from what's in The Gleaner, our Farm to Food podcast, and what's happening around the Valley. You'll help us tell local stories in ways that work on Instagram and beyond. You'll also represent The Gleaner at community events like fairs and markets, helping run our booth and connect with readers, subscribers, and local businesses. And you'll bring ideas — what would get people excited to follow and read a local newspaper?
The person we're looking for is:
- Bilingual (French and English) — essential
- Comfortable on social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok a plus)
- Creative, with a good eye for what makes content engaging
- Outgoing and at ease talking to new people
- Has a valid driver's licence and is willing to travel within the Chateauguay Valley (Chateauguay, Ormstown, Huntingdon etc)
- Available approximately one weekend per month for events
- 30-35 hours per week for 16 weeks
Eligible candidates must be (required by funding program):
- Between 15 and 30 years old at the start of the position
- A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been officially granted refugee protection in Canada
- Legally entitled to work in Canada, including holding a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) at the start of the position
What you'll gain
Real, hands-on experience in community media, content creation, social media strategy, and public outreach — in a region where people actually know your name. You'll build a local professional network and leave with a portfolio of work you made yourself.
