The Museum of Jewish Montreal – an innovative place to connect with Montreal’s diverse Jewish life and heritage through new cultural experiences – is seeking an Exhibitions and Events Coordinator to help expand our Museum’s cultural output as the Museum works to open a new physical space in Spring 2022. The Exhibitions and Events Coordinator will provide support on select events and our Microgrants for Creative or Cultural Exploration program, and will work with the programming and curatorial staff to provide support for the Museum’s 2022 exhibitions cycle. Working with the programming and curatorial teams, and reporting to the Artistic Director and Executive Director, the Exhibitions and Events Coordinator will engage in:
- Event support, including technical support, liaising with artists and/or speakers, event conceptualization, and partnership development in conjunction with the Museum’s curatorial and programming teams.
- Support on the Museum’s 2021-2022 microgrant program, including attendance at virtual professional development seminars (November 2021-January 2022), and providing technical and administrative support during seminars as needed, and support to programming staff in the realization of micrograntees’ projects.
- Co-management on 2021-2022 microgrant projects (December 2021-March 2022), including conceptualization and scheduling within budgetary frameworks, running open-call selection process, liaising with micrograntee and other stakeholders (partners, professional development contacts, etc.), event logistics coordination, event chairing, post-mortems, and evaluation.
- Support on the Museum’s 2022 exhibitions cycle (i.e., contemporary art exhibitions and public mural projects), including exhibition theme conceptualization, research on best practices and innovations in exhibiting, funding research, artist selection and outreach, and planning.
- Support on communications related to events and exhibitions, including collection of materials of artists and/or speakers, and delivery to Museum staff.
- Assistance with funding applications, including co-writing grants and conducting research in conjunction with Museum staff.
Please note that currently, most Museum events are held virtually, and staff are working from a hybrid model (i.e., in-person and work-from-home). Some in-person work will be required. Policies may change over the coming year.
The ideal candidate for this role is a strategic, creative, and organized individual who is excited about the prospect of realizing our Museum’s events and exhibitions, as well as building skills in arts and cultural management. Applicants should also ideally have:
- Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity with the arts and culture sector (required);
- Experience maintaining an artistic practice, and/or an academic background in Museology or Curatorial Studies, Fine Arts, Art History, Public History, Anthropology, Material Culture, Canadian and Québec Studies, Jewish Studies is an asset.
- Previous experience planning and mounting cultural events, including, for example: exhibitions, film screenings, food events, workshops, artist talks, and conferences.
- Strong project management, time management, and decision-making skills, along with exceptional organizational and multitasking skills.
- Ability to work well with others – managing artists, external partners, guest speakers, community members, volunteers, and the public – while also working closely with supervisors and a tight-knit Museum team.
- Comfort communicating with stakeholders about events at the Museum.
- Experience running digital events and familiarity with Zoom.
- Experience managing small project budgets.
- Knowledge of current trends in contemporary art, preferably knowledge of local, Canadian, and/or Jewish artists or creative projects.
- Knowledge of current curatorial practices in contemporary art galleries, artist-run centres and/or community museums.
- Knowledge of the Canadian or Jewish arts and culture funding landscape is an asset.
- An interest in supporting artists’ growth and skill-sharing; knowledge of professional resources for cultural workers is an asset (i.e., CARFAC, CALQ, Canada Council).
- Experience with best practices of art handling and installation. Experience with public art (i.e. murals), as well as digital and media arts, is an asset.
- A high level of comfort with technology and confidence in learning new applications and software. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, design/drafting software (e.g. Rhino, AutoCad, etc.) and/or cue-based playback softwares (e.g. QLab) is an asset.
- A commitment to accessibility, anti-racism, and best practices concerning equity and inclusion in arts and culture.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French.
- Willingness to periodically work evenings and weekends.

- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada;
- are legally entitled to work in Canada;
- are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- meet the eligibility criteria of the program for which you are applying;

- are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
- do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW.
