9TH QUEBEC EMPLOYMENT SERVICE PROVIDERS CONFERENCE: REGISTER NOW!

YES CLIENT OF THE MONTH: KATE PUXLEY

"Leap of Faith (Grouse)"
30" x 48" charcoal on paper

www.katepuxley.com

Five years ago, Kate Puxley graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University, and in 2005, she was one of five Canadian artists short-listed to illustrate The Life of Pi by Yann Martel.

Her inimitable
craft is the creation of unique drawings and taxidermy worked out of roadkill. She has a studio at The Longhaul, which is an artist collective in Park Extension.

Kate completed her BFA with little to no knowledge of the ‘business’ of art.  After years of creating work and attempting to navigate the art market, she decided to seek help from YES.

“I approached YES with scepticism, thinking that the workshops wouldn’t be helpful and that I’d be exactly where I was when I started,” she says. “However, I was pleasantly surprised; I took a series of workshops geared specifically towards artists and learned valuable skills in time management, and grant writing.”

Under the guidance of Monika Majewski, YES’ Artist Program Coordinator, Kate discovered what she needed to improve on in order to build a stronger presence in the arts community.

This past year, she concentrated her efforts on networking and seeking opportunities abroad. Her involvement in YES’ Artist Program resulted in her participation in an art exhibit in Rome as well as a mentorship in Denmark with one of the most internationally renowned leaders in her art.

“I continue to hone my grant writing skills with Monika and I am very optimistic in the success of that endeavour as well.”

Kate will also be participating in a group show curated by local artistic luminary, Chris 'Zeke' Hand from March 17, 2012 - April 29, 2012 at Stewart Hall in Pointe Claire.
